Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly
known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is disease of humans and other primates
caused by the ebolavirus. Symptoms start two days to three weeks after contracting
the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain , and headaches . Typically
nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea follow, along with decreased functioning of the
liver and kidneys . Around this time, affected people may begin to bleed both
within the body and externally. The first known incidents of the Ebola virus
were in 1976.
There were two simultaneous outbreaks
in Nzara in Sudan and Yambuku in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo).
The name of the Ebola river near Yambuku was given to the new epidemic.
Outbreaks have mainly occured in remote villages in Central and West Africa ,
close to tropical rainforests. In the current outbreak, which began in March
2014, more than 1,000 people have died in West Africa, mainly in Guinea, Sierra
Leone and Liberia.
Ebola is described by the World
Health Organisation ( WHO ) as “one of the most virulent viral diseases known
to humankind.” There are five distinct species of Ebola and the survival rate
ranges from 25 to 90%. There is no licensed vaccine for Ebola although several
are currently being tested. However some people over the weeks have been
causing fear and panic as well as raising hopes on social media platforms as
there has been series of broadcast messages most of which not well informed
people that kola nuts and Zmapp tested on two American doctors in USA recently
as being the cure for dangerous EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD) and that the EVD can
also be contracted via swimming in pools which has accidentally been also used
by persons affected by EVD. Please this information is a plain lie and must be
totally ignored.
Transmission of the EVD among humans
almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers
tending to the very ill. The EVD is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach,
sunlight, or drying. A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing
saturated with infected body fluids. Also a person can incubate the virus
without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being 5-8 days before becoming ill.
THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill. Remember, ONLY when ill
does the viral load express itself first in the blood and then in other bodily
fluids (to include vomit, feces, urine, breast milk, semen and sweat).
You cannot contract Ebola by handling money or
swimming in a pool. There is no medical reason to stop flights, close borders,
restrict travel or close embassies, businesses or schools. As always practice
good hand washing techniques, but you will not contract Ebola if you do not
touch a dying person. Ebola is also NOT AIRBORNE. Protect and prevent yourself
from contracting Ebola by regularly washing your hands with Soap. You can also
use a good hand sanitizer and also avoid unnecessary contact especially handshakes.
Ebola is untreatable so let’s all be extremely cautious and maintain good
physical hygiene as a cure for it for the time being.
The spread of Ebola in West Africa
is deeply troubling for the region and the world at large, as Ghana is putting
up measures to curb this menace. Please do not hesitate to Report any
suspicious symptoms in yourself or anyone else IMMEDIATELY you notice them.
Don't delay!! Tell your family and friends. You are safer when everyone is
educated about. Please maintain a good physical hygiene and be very cautious to
cure Ebola in as advance before you get infested. As it stands now keeping good
'Physical Hygiene and Cautiousness' (PH&C for short) is the only accepted cure
for Ebola Virus Disease. Indeed prevention is better than cure.
