Father Impregnates lovely Daughter

Edem Fedieley a the Adenta Police Station

A 40-year-old driver who allegedly fathered a child with his biological daughter has found himself in the grip of the Adentan Police.
The man, identified as Edem Fedieley, was arrested after his 17-year-old junior high school (JHS) dropout daughter had told the police about the instances of sexual abuse and assault she had suffered since she was 12.
At age 16, the victim was said to have been impregnated by her father.
After she was delivered of a baby boy last year, Fedieley put her on a family planning contraceptive known as Norplant for a period of five years to prevent another pregnancy.
According to the police, the girl claimed that her father usually mixed alcohol and honey and compelled her to drink it before he forcibly had sex with her three times in a week.
The victim was said to have vacated her father’s house one morning after she had been subjected to another bout of sexual abuse because she could not take it any longer.

Daughter runs away
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Adentan District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu, said on August 10, 2014, Fedieley reported to the police that his daughter, who lived in the same house with him at Adentan, was missing.
While the police were investigating the complaint, Fedieley reportedly informed the police on August 11, 2014 that he knew the whereabouts of his daughter.
“He led the police to a house where his daughter and a 19-year-old man were picked up for interrogation,” Mr Ahiatafu said.
Initially, he said, the police charged the man who was living with the girl in his house with abduction, since Fedieley claimed his daughter had been kidnapped.

Girl speaks to police
“However, during interrogation, the girl said she was abandoned by her mother when she was only seven months old and had been taken care of by her father ever since,” he said.
According to him, the girl said her father started having sex with her when she turned 12 and threatened her not to inform anyone about it or risk her life.
He said the girl alleged that her father made her drink honey and a locally distilled alcohol which made her drowsy and weak before having sex with her.
On August 6, 2014, the victim, after one of the sexual encounters, packed out of her father’s house.
Mr Ahiatafu said she relocated to the house of the young man in whom she had confided and with whom she had become friends a few days earlier.
“So the complainant was rather arrested and interrogated, in the course of which he admitted the offence,” Mr Ahiatafu said.
He said the victim had assault marks all over her body.
Fedieley has since been charged with incest and he will be put before court soon.

GES to withhold indebted candidates WASSCE results

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it will withhold results of candidates who wrote the 2014 West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), but failed or refused to make full payment of their school fees.
According to the GES, the results of affected students will not be released until they have cleared their indebtedness to their schools.
A statement signed by the Director of Public Relations, Charles Parker-Allotey, said the attention of the GES has been drawn to the high levels of indebtedness of students in many second cycle institutions, particularly those in the final year.
It said the situation, which has persisted for some time, has reached a point where necessary steps are needed to put an end to it.
It noted that, during the course of the last academic year, Heads of schools, in an effort to avert the practice, resorted to unapproved ways including the covert charging of second and third term fees in the second term, consequently causing the GES to direct all Heads of schools to put an end to the practice.
Expressing concern over the practice, the GES entreated all parents and guardians to settle their indebtedness to enable their wards access their results.
“GES and West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) shall not be held liable for any inconvenience caused to candidates affected by their inability to access their results.  Heads of schools should be in readiness to give clearance to such candidates after the payment of their fees for the release of their results,” the statement added.

Ghanaians Thrown Out Of Big Brother Africa 2014?

Organisers of the Big Brother Africa competition have reported rejected the candidates selected to represent Ghana at the contest. According to a report by Ghanaian website, StarrFMonline.com , four candidates were rejected on the basis of the Ebola scare in West Africa. Quoting unnamed sources at Endemol, producers of the BBA show, the report said the four candidates who made it through the selection stage in Ghana were rejected because of the Ebola Scare in the West African sub-region. “An official revealed that fresh auditions are being held to select new Ghanaian candidates for the popular TV reality show of the continent.

The new audition is only opened to Ghanaian nationals leaving in South Africa as a precautionary measure. It is expected that the same thing will be done to candidates from all of West Africa, especially countries where the Ebola disease has been recorded,” StarrFMonline.com reported Sunday. LUIS SUÁREZ TO PLAY FIRST GAME FOR BARCELONA TODAY

The Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, has confirmed Luis SuĂĄrez will make his debut in Monday night’s friendly against the Mexican side LeĂłn. The Uruguay forward had been forced to train away from his new team-mates after completing a £75m move to the Catalan club in July, due to the four- month ban incurred for biting the Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

However, he now has two group sessions under his belt after the Court of Arbitration for Sport relaxed the ”excessive” elements of the suspension, and Enrique plans to hand the 27-year- old some game time on Monday. “The impression is that he is a player of a very high standard,” the Barcelona coach was quoted as saying at a press conference on Sunday. “I know how we play and he fits how we play. I would like to give him some minutes [on Monday]. He did a great job when he trained alone.” SuĂĄrez failed in his appeal to have the entire suspension – covering ”all football- related activity” – removed, but was permitted to train and play in friendlies for club and country after the CAS ruled the punishment was overly harsh.

However, he will have to wait until the weekend of 25 October to make his competitive debut – the weekend of the first ClĂĄsico of the La Liga campaign against arch rivals Real Madrid at the BernabĂŠu. SuĂĄrez will be presented in front of Barcelona fans at the Camp Nou before Monday’s match, which could see him form a formidable front line alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar. Neymar has been given medical clearance to play after breaking a vertebra during the World Cup. Barcelona begin their league season at home to Elche next Sunday.

Petr Cech 'trolls' Liverpool on Twitter

Chelsea goalkeeper responded to a fan asking about Steven Gerrard's Premier League medals tally
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has seemingly trolled Liverpool and their captain, Steven Gerrard, on social networking site Twitter whilst holding a Q&A session for his followers.
The Blues shot-stopper, decided to hold a question and answer session in order to get closer to his fans, and when one of his followers asked him the following question: ‘Is it true messi has scored the same amount of goals against you as Steven Gerrard has premier league medals?’, Cech responded by saying 'you are right'.
Unfortunately for Gerrard, he is yet to win a Premier League Winners medal, and fortunately for Cech, he is yet to concede to the world's best footballer, Lionel Messi.
Despite Chelsea facing Barcelona numerous times in the Champions League, the Argentine has failed on each occasion to get the better of Cech, even missing a penalty back in the 2012 semi-final.

Meridian Varsity shut down; about 300 students worried

The fate of about 300 students of the Meridian University College (MUC) at Kasoa in the Central Region hangs in the balance following a decision by the management of the college to dissolve it.

The management of the college has cited low enrolment and financial challenges as the basis to dissolve the college, an action described by education all experts as unprecedented.

But some of the students are considering legal action against the management of the college to safeguard their academic interest.

The MUC is accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), but both the regulatory body and the mentoring institution say they have not been officially informed about the dissolution of the college.

Currently, the college is on vacation but when the Daily Graphic visited the campus last Friday, some anxious students were holding a meeting to discuss the way forward.

Although the management has put in place some interim measures to deal with the situation, such as assisting continuing students to secure transfer to other nearby institutions, the students fear the implications of those measures on their academic pursuits could be dire, hence their contemplation of legal redress.

When the Daily Graphic visited the Kasoa campus of the MUC, there was no management official to clarify issues as all the administrative offices were closed.

Only one out of four mobile telephone numbers retrieved from the website of the NAB: www.nab.gov.gh, last Friday, which forms part of the address of the MUC, went through when the Daily Graphic called, but the receiver said he was not in a position to comment on the matter.

However, a ‘Special Notice’ posted by the management of the MUC on the college’s notice board, under the signature of Joseph Kwesi Odom and dated July 11, 2014, appears unambiguous.

It reads in part: “Students are hereby informed that it has become necessary for the chancellor to dissolve the college due to low patronage resulting in low enrolment; inability of the college to raise funds to support the chancellor and the precarious current financial position of the chancellor.”

In the interim, the notice states, management has decided to organise a resit for graduating students (Level 400 Upper) from August 25, 2014 to September 5, 2014, adding that students due for resit are to register by August 22, 2014.

The notice further indicates that a seven-week sandwich programme will be organised for levels 100 Lower, 300 Lower and 400 Lower students to complete the academic year.

The sandwich programme is scheduled to start from August 25, 2014 to October 3, 2014, with the end-of-semester examination scheduled to start from October 6, 2014 to October 10, 2014.

“Students shall be required to pay the full semester fee of GH¢1,250 before the programme begins. There will be no concession for any student who fails to pay the fee,” the notice states.

In another notice addressed to the public, the management says, “admission of students for the 2014/2015 academic year has been suspended indefinitely."

The students do not seem to be clear on many issues, but they claim telephone calls made to the chancellor, management staff and lecturers to seek clarification on same have all hit dead ends.

The students are, for instance, questioning the payment of full semester fees of Ghc1,250 under the circumstances as captured in the ‘Special Notice’.

They are also concerned about the likelihood of paying higher fees in institutions where they may be transferred to, as their enquiries at those institutions have revealed.

Furthermore, they are not certain about the level on which they may be placed at the other institutions upon their transfer.

The Daily Graphic learnt a management meeting has been scheduled to take place on the campus today, and the students are eager to be present to demand answers to the nagging issues.

When contacted on telephone, the Deputy Registrar of the UCC responsible for Institutional Affiliation, Dr Sena Kpeglo, and the Executive Director of the NAB, Mr Kwame Dattey, said the MUC had not officially informed their institutions about its dissolution.

They said if their institutions had been informed officially, they would have helped the MUC to handle the situation properly.

Dr Kpeglo said a consultant of the MUC had discussed the matter with her unofficially, and she had advised the college to write officially to the UCC, so that the two institutions could discuss the way forward, but that was not done.

Dr Kpeglo explained that as the mentoring institution, the UCC was only responsible for ensuring the academic integrity of the college, such as meeting basic admission requirements and academic standards.

She said the UCC was not responsible for the administrative functions of the MUC, adding that it was the responsibility of the college management to attract high enrolment and secure the financial wherewithal to run the institution.

For his part, Mr Dattey said it was the first time an accredited tertiary institution was being dissolved, and so there was no precedence to follow in terms of handling the situation.

He said under the circumstances, the NAB was primarily concerned about the students, adding that if the MUC management had informed the board about the dissolution, it could have assisted in finding the best way out.

Responding to a question on how the NAB ascertained the financial strength of tertiary institutions before granting them accreditation, Mr Dattey said applicant institutions were required to submit a financial sustainability plan as part of the conditions for accreditation.

He said the financial sustainability plan was analysed by financial experts, pointing out that the MUC case had come after it had secured accreditation.
